You silly goose… I love you.
Sebastian nodded, “wheelchair it is! I just think fresh air outside of the hospital would be nice. Hospitals always have that smell.” He made a face, then poked his head outside of the room and caught the attention of a nurse. “Hi, sorry. I was wondering if we could take Kurt outside for some fresh air? With a wheelchair of course.” The nurse nodded and brought them over a wheelchair. Burt and Sebastian helped Kurt into the wheelchair as much as Kurt would let them and soon enough they were heading out of the building and into the little courtyard that was on hospital grounds, with Sebastian pushing the chair and Burt walking beside them. He was incredibly grateful that this wasn’t going to be a regular occurrence for them, spending time at the hospital.
Kurt was simply glad to be able to get out of that bed; now he understood what his father told him once about being able to made a cast with the wrinkles on his butt from that ichy bed. On his way out of the room, after he was helped into the wheelchair, he was able to snag the personal bag that Sebastian had brought him from home, and he placed it on his lap as he was wheeled out of the hospital. At first, he squinted his eyes from how bright everything was, then was grateful when Sebastian was able to find a place where they could settle, under a big tree that had a bench under it where his boyfriend and his father could sit down. He took the chance to rack his bag for some personal items that mainly included a brush for his hair and his sunglasses, plus a mirror. He fixed his hair so the patch on his scalp wasn’t all that visible, while silently praying that his hair would grow quickly. And while they all sit there, making small talk about small things, Kurt took a deep breath and smiled.
Everything wwould be fine.
It had to be.
Sebastian nodded, “absolutely. How long did the doctor say? A couple of days? I’ll bring you some clothes for when they discharge you although… uhh… you might want to tell me which ones because I don’t want to get two things that don’t go together or anything.” He chuckled ruefully, rubbing the back of his neck. He still didn’t want to leave the hospital, would gladly spend the next two days waiting but he also knew Kurt would probably insist he and Burt go home later that night and get a good night’s sleep and at least he knew he could sleep easier, not tossing and turning and worrying about what was going to happen the next day. “So,” he said clapping his hands together, “what do you want to do? Are you allowed to leave your room? We could go for a walk or something? If you wanted… I just figure you’ve been laying down for hours…”
Kurt chuckled at first, then turned serious. “You better take a good look on that one. I can’t possibly wear an illed combination of pajamas in here!” He winked at him, the mood in the room definitely much lighter, then scrunched his nose. “I don’t know… I don’t think I can walk that much yet. Brain surgery and all.” He poked his tongue out to him. “But I think it’d be nice to leave the room for a while so maybe… the wheelchair would be best?” He looked between both men and giggled. “Come on, guys. You have to pamper me while I’m in here, before I go out and then I get my full bitch on mode on both of you.” He laughed softly.
"You should have time to recover from the surgery and your other injuries though," Sebastian replied, "don’t let them talk you in to coming back to work straight away. You’re gonna take some time off, right?" Burt cleared his throat when Kurt was talking about being warm in the bed and Sebastian looked at him, a little afraid if he was being honest. Burt took one look at Sebastian and laughed, "relax, Sebastian. I know you snuck into Kurt’s room when you were both visiting." "Err," Sebastian said, "you knew about that?" "The floors creak and you don’t walk quietly," Burt replied and Sebastian had the grace to blush a little then turned back to Kurt, wiping his thumb across his cheek gently, "I love you too."
Kurt nodded when Sebastian asked him if he was going to take a break, and he was about to say something else when his father’s comeback shut him up. “Dad!” He too blushed hard at his words, but he giggled when he saw the cute way in which Sebastian was shy about that too, and in the back of his mind, and much to his own desmain, he wondered if his father listened to ‘everything’ they did that night. He shook those thoughts of his head and chuckled. “That shall be topic for another day. Now, we all need to relax and count the minutes until I can finally get out of here.”
Sebastian listened to the doctor and let his words reassure him that everything really did look okay. He understood the need to check if everything was going fine, and knew he wouldn’t let Kurt forget a check up (even though he didn’t expect Kurt would anyway). When Kurt turned to him, he couldn’t but return the grin, “couldn’t want to if I tried anyway. Guess we’re stuck with each other, huh?” He felt much more relaxed now, knowing that everything was going to be fine, “I rang Vogue by the way, to let them know you wouldn’t be in. I just said you had food poisoning. I wasn’t really sure what I should say… I figured that at least bought you a couple of days.”
Kurt smiled, then pulled up Sebastian’s hand and kissed it. “Very stuck together. Oh, thanks baby. I guess I shall call my boss later today or tomorrow and explain; I don’t want for them to make a fuss about it, but they might as well know.” The doctor excused himself from the room, saying that he would leave the indications and meds prescriptions at the nurses’ desk, but not before Burt gave him one more hug before he left. Kurt chuckled and shook his head, then turned to look at Sebastian. “Can’t wait to get out of here… I hate this bed. I want to be in our bed, next to you. I’ve so cold without you to keep me warm…” A few more tears went down his face, silent tears, relief tears. “I love you, Sebastian…” He smiled at him fondly.
Sebastian let out a sound of relief. “Ohthankgod,” he said in one breath, dropping his head against the mattress with a soft thud. He took in another breath and looked up at Kurt with a genuine smile, “guess you can’t get away from me that easy, huh?” He winked, then turned to the doctor, “so… what happens now? Is the whole thing removed, was it in an operable area? Or just a small portion to test it? Was it a grade 1 or 2?” He paused, then chewed on his lip, “I might have read online last night. Sorry, I know how doctors hate that, I just couldn’t help myself. They said even benign tumors can come back if it was a grade two because they can mutate…” He looked up at the doctor, “is that true?”
Ever since learning about the fact that he had a tumor in his brain, Kurt had felt like an elephant had sat on his chest, preventing him from breathing; but the moment the doctor said that single word, a whole rush of air came in and inflated his lungs again, the veil that had set in his eyes finally lifted up. Sebastian’s words translated his own feelings properly, as did his father’s reaction, which was to bounce up and down and hug the doctor before he came to the bed and hugged Kurt. The three men melted in one single embrace, all three of them crying quietly, from happiness, then looked at the doctor as he explained that they extracted all the tumor from where it was, and that after a couple of days, he would be good to go home. Also, he told him that he needed t have at least a three-time a year checkup to make sure everything was going fine. “I can do that, no problem doctor.” He then looked at Sebastian and grinned. “It is you who won’t get rid of me that easy, baby.”
Burt made sure they both had a decent breakfast before they left for the hospital in the morning, much to Sebastian’s chagrin who just wanted to get moving as fast as possible. But they both got showered and changed, and Sebastian packed a small bag for Kurt with some clothes, pjs and skin care routine, and then also his laptop bag. When they finally left for the hospital, Sebastian was chewing his lip nervously, worried about the verdict but if Burt noticed, he didn’t say anything. They got into Kurt’s room and Sebastian smiled. At least Kurt looked better than yesterday, some of the swelling from his wounds had already gone down and he looked better after a long sleep. He shrugged at his question, “some. A restless sleep though. I brought you your laptop and some clothes.” He held up the bags to show him, before setting them down. Burt looked over at him too, “and before you say anything, kid. I made sure Sebastian ate breakfast and I did too, with my medication. So stop worrying about us, and tell us how do you feel?”
Kurt was equally happy to see his loved ones again, and also of having some of the things that would help make things more bareable for the time he needed to stay there whether is was long or short. “I feel better, Dad, thanks… And don’t nag me about me nagging you about your medication, you know how important that is.” He took Sebastian’s hand and pulled him down into a sweet kiss, then they all sat around him, while his dad made small talk about how tricky New York traffic was, clearly to get their minds out of what really concerned them at that time. Kurt was, for one, happy about that, and he held onto Sebastian’s hand the whole time while listening to his dad.
After a short while, the doctor came into the room. “Mr. Hummel.” Kurt squeezed Sebastian’s hand and took his father’s with his free one, then nodded. “Doctor.” The man walked up to the bed, with a folder in his hand. “I know you’re all waiting for me to give you some news, so I won’t beat around the bush.” He looked at him and smiled. “It was bening. Congratulations.”
Sebastian made a mental list of all the things Kurt wanted, nodding along. He quirked a small smile, “only you would be concerned about keeping up with your skin routine after surgery. But of course. Hopefully I’ll get the right ones… I’m pretty sure I know which ones you use.” He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead, “it’s understandable with the anesthesia and stuff. Sleep now. Your Dad and I will be back in a few hours, okay?” Burt also leaned down to say goodbye to Kurt and then Sebastian reluctantly let go of his hand as Kurt fell asleep. When he left the room his shoulders slumped, “do you think Kurt would kill me if I slept in the waiting room?” “He would kill us both,” Burt replied, “come on. Do you have your car? I can drive.” “I don’t… no. I don’t really drive much anymore. Not a fan since my accident,” he explained, “I never got around to getting a new car. I caught a cab.” “Okay then, cab it is. Come on.” The two of them went back to Kurt and Sebastian’s apartment, Burt having stayed there before, when Sebastian hadn’t been living there, so he knew where the guest room was. As soon as Sebastian’s body hit their bed, the smell of Kurt made him feel warm and at home, and he fell asleep almost instantly.
It felt like right before the surgery, his eyes falling shut on their own accord and before he even could say good night, or good morning he was asleep. He didn’t know just how long he was out, his head now hurting a lot less, maybe because he didn’t have that mass inside of it anymore, although that pressure was replaced by the concern of knowing what was going to happen from now on. When he finally woke up again, he stretched out on the bed and looked at the clock on the wall, just above the door. 11 am. He sighed and closed his eyes again just to rest, when the door was opened and he looked up and smiled. “Dad! Sebastian! Please, tell me you slept at least a little…” He frowned.
"I can rest here," Sebastian said stubbornly, shaking his head, "it’s fine. How long will the results take? I’ll call your work in the morning and let them know you won’t be in until you ring them and let them know. Hopefully only the recovery time for the surgery, of course." He gave Kurt’s hand a squeeze and shrugged, "and we both slept for an hour or so already in the waiting room, so I’m good." Kurt argued though, and after a fairly lengthy discussion, both Burt and Sebastian agreed to get some rest, but only if Kurt knew they would both be back as soon as possible. "Just a shower and a sleep," Sebastian promised him, "then we’ll be back. Did you want me to bring you anything? Some clothes, magazines, your laptop?" At this stage, he was unsure how long Kurt would have to stay in the hospital, given the fact he’d basically just had brain surgery on top of the fight that seemed like years ago now.
Kurt was glad to have been able to convince Sebastian to go home and take a rest, no matter how short it would be, and by defect, he would take his father along, who also needed some good rest and food, so he could take his medicine properly. “Let’s see… My laptop would be great, yeah, also its charger. Clean underwear and a clean pajamas. Oh, and my creams for my morning and night time beauty rituals, you know which one they are, baby.” He sighed and looked at him with a soft smile, the latter effect of the anesthesia once again lingering over him. “Okay, I’m sleepy again… whoa… where did that come from?” He struggled to keep his eyes open, his hand never letting go of Sebastian’s.
Sebastian yawned, opening his eyes. When he realised what the nurse was saying, he sat bolt upright, feeling completely away, “yes? We can go in? Both of us?” She nodded and Sebastian was relieved. He’d seen stories online, of people who were refused to see their husbands, let alone their boyfriends, because the state didn’t classify them as family. But despite the recent rise in gay bashings in New York, he was glad at least this side of things didn’t seem affected. Although in most of those cases it was the homophobic family that shut the partner out, and at least he knew Burt wouldn’t do that to him or Kurt. He followed Burt into the room, rushing to Kurt’s side as Burt went to his other side. “Kurt?” Sebastian spoke first, “how do you feel?”
Kurt was staring at the ceiling since he wasn’t really too strong to move a lot, but he was able to turned his head to the door when it sprung open and his dad and boyfriend rushed to his sides. “Hi… I’m okay, just really tired. What about you guys?” He looked at the window. “You’ve been here all night? Have you got any sleep? Dad, have you eaten anthing? Have you taken your pills? Those must be on the clock, remember? I don’t want you getting sick… And, Sebastian… baby, have you slept at all?” Burt took his hand and patted his shoulder. “Kurt, relax. I’ll eat in a bit and I always have my pills on me, just in case. Now you need to rest while we wait for the results, okay?” Kurt nodded. “Maybe you two could go to our apartment and take a rest? I don’t want to tired anyone out.” Somewhere deep inside, Kurt knew it would take more than just a simple request to get Sebastian out of there.
